Drill press operation – safety procedures

Last Updated: 26.10.21

Your drill press will enable you to carry out a variety of drilling applications from the simplest hole cutting tasks to the most elaborate ones that will involve use with a sander or rotary files. As it is generally a high-precision workshop tool running on electricity, the drill press comes with critical safety instructions on proper setup, maintenance, operation and service.

Keep the manual for reference

Unless you have a photographic memory and can memorize every illustration, the list of parts and replacements, and everything provided in the manual, you must keep this piece of literature for future reference, considering the kind of power tool the drill press is. The manual is provided for you to read and understand before using the machine and not just when you encounter a problem with your drill press. The untrained user can get seriously injured and the manual helps you know proper operation. If you experience difficulties performing an application, call the manufacturer’s customer service line for help.

Wearing protection

Like any other piece of machinery, the drill press should be operated while wearing eye protection, as well as hearing protection and proper apparel.

Jewelry as well as garments that do not qualify as work clothes could get entangled in the machine’s moving parts. Use slip proof footwear to avoid accidents that can make you lose control of the workpiece as well. Use an ANSI-approved face shield or safety glasses when running or observing the drill press to reduce the risk of eye injury or blindness from the flying particles. Your everyday eyeglasses are not safety glasses. Extended exposure to the loud noise that some machines make can lead to permanent hearing loss, so wear hearing protection as needed.

Observe proper preparation of the unit and workpiece before operation.

Make sure you’re using the correct type of drill bit, and make sure this component is properly tightened and securely locked into the chuck. All adjusting wrenches and keys should be removed before the drill press is switched on. Ensure that sheet metal is securely clamped to the table prior to drilling. The worktable has to be clear of all objects such as scrap wood and tools before switching the machine on. Drill on a flat surface workpiece or use support when necessary. Secure the stock before drilling using suitable vises or clamps. If the drill press is in poor condition, have it serviced first to avoid injury and ensure problem-free control.

Operate your drill press with full focus and mental alertness

Any type of machinery has to be operated with full mental alertness. Running the drill press when you’re under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or are over fatigued or when distracted could result in accidents in the workshop. Turn the machine off if you have to take or make a call. Do not light up when running the drill press. Run the drill press at appropriate speeds to match the drill bit size and the workpiece you’re working with. Do not perform maintenance or alter spin speeds with the unit plugged in. Observe consistent feeding of the drill bit into the stock. Do not start the drill press until the table lock has been tightened.
